New York
As Europe's leading music festival and largest international platform for pop culture, the Reeperbahn Festival was once again at the forefront of change with a strong presence in New York City. Reeperbahn Festival New York focused on promoting equality and diversity in the music industry through its partnership with Keychange.
For the seventh time, the Reeperbahn Festival travelled to New York to give a 35-person delegation of German and European music industry representatives the opportunity to network with top US music industry executives at A2IM Indie Week from 13-16 June.
The aim was to provide delegates with a programme of various panels and 1:1 matchmaking sessions as part of the world's largest independent music conference, and with the support of the German Foreign Office, to gain insights into the American market and make valuable contacts. The delegates also had the opportunity to do this during company visits to the headquarters of YouTube, The Orchard and Spotify.
The topic of diversity was the focus of many activities at this year's intercultural and music business exchange. For example, on 14 June, on the occasion of the US launch of the international initiative Keychange, which campaigns for gender equality in the music industry, the Hamburg festival organisers came up with a very special highlight and invited guests from the international music industry, media and politics, including, among others, Sima Sami Bahou's "The Orchard" and "Spotify". Sima Sami Bahous, UN Deputy Secretary General and Executive Director UN Women , Christine Osazuwa, UK Director, Shesaid.so and Portia Sabin, President of the Music Business Association, to a panel discussion and showcase evening at The Delancey in the Lower East Side. Afterwards, ROBA Music Publishing presented the results of the female, trans & non-binary songwriting camp.
With a diverse line-up of emerging talent from Europe, the showcase wowed a diverse audience from the industry and the general public. Among them: ANCHOR - Reeperbahn Festival International Music Award 2020 winner ÄTNA from Germany, one of the most important acts in Northern Ireland, SOAK, as well as BBC Sound of 2016 nominee Billie Marten (UK).
